You can ask what your care is expected to cost before you begin.
If you are uninsured or are not using insurance, you have the right to a written Good Faith Estimate of the total expected charges for your health care, including related items and services.
When to expect your estimate
- Schedule 3–9 business days ahead: receive the estimate within 1 business day after scheduling.
- Schedule at least 10 business days ahead: receive it within 3 business days after scheduling.
- Ask before scheduling: receive it within 3 business days of your request.
Ask for the estimate on paper or electronically. Keep a copy to compare with your bill.
If your bill is higher
You may dispute a bill that is at least $400 above that provider’s estimate. For information about your rights and the dispute process, visit CMS or call 1-800-985-3059.
